Most of these activities are always rated high among the top places to visit and fun things to do in Chattanooga, TN.

I live in Chattanooga, TN, and know the city inside and out. Over the years, I’ve found some of the best indoor attractions in Chattanooga, especially for rainy days or when the summer heat makes outdoor plans tricky. Chattanooga has more than just mountains and riverwalks. We’ve got some amazing indoor attractions and hidden gems, too.

Here are my favorite picks for staying cool, dry, and entertained in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

1. 🎬 IMAX Theater at the Tennessee Aquarium

The IMAX Theater in downtown Chattanooga is a fun indoor attraction. With a screen six stories high and surround sound that makes the seats rumble, the whole experience feels larger than life.

This fun attraction for all ages is located near the Tennessee Aquarium downtown. IMAX Movie theater features documentaries, nature films, and the occasional blockbuster. It’s a perfect stop if you’re downtown and need a break from walking around.

2. 🛍️ Hamilton Place Mall

Hamilton Place Mall is the largest shopping destination in Chattanooga, TN. This huge indoor mall is one of the top indoor activities in the city. Hamilton Place is great for browsing, walking, or staying cool on a hot or rainy day. The mall also has a Dave & Buster’s for families with kids looking for indoor fun.

The Hamilton Mall has big-name stores, smaller boutiques, restaurants, and even a few spots to sit and relax. Locals know it’s more than just shopping—it’s also a great place to hang out without worrying about the heat or rain.

The mall is not downtown but is an approximate 20-minute drive, depending on traffic. Travel Note: Traffic in Nooga can be very challenging, so plan accordingly. Those looking for shopping areas in downtown should check out Warehouse Row or one of the many local shops.

Just steps from the museum, you’ll find cozy coffee shops, local bakeries, and some of the best restaurants in Chattanooga—all perfect for pairing with your visit.

Inside, you’ll find thoughtful exhibitions, rotating shows, and quiet galleries perfect for slow wandering. As far as indoor attractions go, this one has beauty and peace built right in.

Ruby Falls takes you deep inside Lookout Mountain to see an underground waterfall over 140 feet tall. The guided cave tour is fascinating, with colorful lights and amazing rock formations.

Spoiler Alert: I’ve heard the water is pumped in. But, hey, Ruby Falls is still considered one of Chattanooga’s most popular attractions. PLus the kids are going to love it.

This museum, located next to the Aquarium, shares the stories of America’s Medal of Honor recipients. The exhibits are emotional, combining film, interactive displays, and historical artifacts.

Travel Note: This popular Chattanooga train experience does not depart from downtown or the Choo Choo. Travelers will need to drive to the train terminal. Contrary to popular belief, the Chattanooga Choo Choo station is no longer a functioning railroad terminal.
