Here’s something most people don’t realize:
There aren’t many public beaches in the Florida Keys.

When Steve and I visited for the first time, we were honestly surprised. We expected long stretches of sandy shorelineβ€”but quickly learned that public beaches in the Florida Keys are pretty rare.

A lot of the Florida Keys shoreline is rocky, covered in mangroves, or part of private resortsβ€”not ideal if you’re searching for a classic beach day.

That’s what makes Bahia Honda Beach so special. It’s not only open to the publicβ€”it’s one of the best swimming beaches in the Keys. Bahia Honda Beach is also very affordable and perfect for tourists on a budget.

If you are asking yourself: Is Bahia Honda worth it? With soft sand, clear water, and plenty of space to spread out, the answer is definitely yes..

🌴 Where Is Bahia Honda Beach? Is Bahia Honda Worth It? Post:

When deciding is Bahia Honda is worth it, location is important. Bahia Honda Beach is easy to find. Many road trippers will happen upon it completely by accident. Like we did!

Why Bahia Honda Beach is So Special

Bahia Honda State Park is one of the best beaches in the Florida Keys.

It’s unique because Bahia Honda is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The beaches of Bahia Honda, camping, and all amenities are part of the Florida State Park system.

Being situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of America / Mexico means you get two incredible views in one spotβ€”the ocean on one side, the gulf on the other. Total win.

Even better? The beach is easy to find. Just look for it off Highway 1, right before you reach Big Pine Key. Bahia Honda State Park can be incorporated into a day trip, road trip, or final camping destination.

If you are searching for a Florida Keys beach with parking and public access, this one checks all the boxes.

πŸ– Why We Think It’s the Best Beach in the Florida Keys

Honestly, why Bahia Honda is worth it is because it’s the kind of place that checks every box:

  • Unbeatable Views: Think turquoise water, swaying palm trees, and some of the softest sand around.
  • Sunrise and Sunset: You can catch both from the same spotβ€”how cool is that?
  • Activities for Everyone: Kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, nature trails, or just lying under a palm with a good book.
  • Easy Parking & Clean Facilities: Yes, there are real bathrooms. And plenty of room to park.
  • Camping Options: From RV spots to tent sites and even cabins!

πŸ•“ Hours, Prices & Park Info

  • Open Daily: 8:00 AM to Sunset
  • Admission:
  • $8 per vehicle (up to 8 people)

πŸ• Camping at Bahia Honda – Is it worth it?

I don’t (yet) own a camper, but I peeked at the campground and had a bit of travel envy. It looked peaceful, clean, and surrounded by tropical beauty. On the camping aspect, you’ll have to judge for yourself. In my resort staying opinion, I would say yes.

  • RV & Tent Camping: ~$36/night + tax and $6.70 reservation fee
  • Cabins: Six on-site cabins available for rent (~$120–$160 per night)
  • Includes Water & electricity for campsites

Tip: This spot is super popular, so book well in advance!

🌿 What About the Seagrass?

You may notice seagrass along the shore, and that’s normal. It’s left in place to help protect the natural ecosystem. Some people don’t love how it looks, but honestly, I didn’t mind. The sand was still soft, the views were amazing, and the water was crystal clear. If you’re wondering, β€œIs Bahia Honda worth it?”—I’d still say absolutely yes.

Those who have vacationed in natural shoreline areas, who are not a fan of seagrass, may want to choose other beach accommodations.

πŸŒ‰ Can You Still Walk the Old Bridge?

Yes! The old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge, partially destroyed in the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, is now a unique walking spot with epic views.

It’s an easy, short nature trail from the beach to the bridge entrance. The walk has a slight incline, but it’s very doable, even in flip-flops. Important to note, not the entire bridge in Bahia Honda State Park is walkable, only a small portion.
