The Passage and Chattanooga Waterfall Steps: What to Know Before You Go

The Passage Chattanooga Waterfall Steps – A Powerful Walk Through History (and Yes, Kids Love It Too)

If you’re visiting the Tennessee Aquarium, don’t miss The Passage – also known locally as the Chattanooga waterfall steps – a moving tribute to Cherokee history. These waterfall steps also double as a surprisingly fun spot for kids to splash and explore.

Funny that I lived in Chattanooga five years before discovering this hidden gem. Don’t be me. Cascading waterfall stairs are an outdoor attraction open 24/7. The water only flows during the warmer weather months. You’ll want your kids to bring a bathing suit if they are gonna go all in. Otherwise, the stairs are still fun to walk up and get your feet wet.

The outdoor waterfall stairs are located on the side of the Aquarium (you’ll find it along the glass wall facing the river). The Passage marks the beginning of the Trail of Tears. This is the spot where, in 1838, thousands of Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their land and began their long, tragic journey west.

At The Passage, you’ll see seven tall columns that represent the Cherokee clans, story plaques that explain the history, and a beautiful waterfall that flows down stone steps.

And here’s the unexpected part: kids love the Chattanooga waterfall steps. On hot days, you’ll see little ones splashing around or racing up and down the wet steps—so bring a towel if you’re traveling with young ones.

Travel Tip: This area can feel a bit hidden if you don’t know where to look. The best way to access it is from the Tennessee Aquarium—just head around the side nearest the glass entrance and you’ll see it tucked beside the building. There is also a lower entrance from Ross’s Landing, but I don’t recommend starting there.

Just down the hill from The Passage, you’ll find Ross’s Landing—a peaceful riverfront park named after Cherokee leader Chief John Ross. It’s a great spot to walk along the Tennessee River, catch views of the Walnut Street Bridge, or enjoy a picnic. You’ll often see boats docked nearby, and if you’re lucky, maybe even a riverfront event or concert.

Local Note: The Walnut Street Bridge is currently closed for renovations as of 4/12/2025. I will keep you posted on when renovations are completed. This will not effect your visit to waterfall stairs, but you may wish to keep note of this for your Chattanooga, TN itinerary.

Right next to it is the Tennessee Aquarium, one of the top-rated aquariums in the country. It’s actually split into two buildings—one for River Journey and one for Ocean Journey—so you can explore everything from Appalachian otters to giant sea turtles. It’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone who loves marine life (and air conditioning!).

My recommendation is to visit the Chattanooga Aquarium first and then visit the waterfall attractions.

Local Note on Safety: You may notice some homelessness in the lower section near the Tennessee River. While the area is public and usually peaceful, if you’re traveling with children, I recommend staying in the upper section closest to the aquarium. It feels safer and more monitored, especially during slower times of the day. This could also be a good opportunity for a conversation with your kids about compassion and real-world challenges.

What Makes The Passage Chattanooga Waterfall Steps Special:

  • The Chattanooga waterfall steps are free and open to the public
  • Emotionally powerful for adults, especially history buffs.
  • The Chattanooga water fall steps are unexpectedly fun for kids (water + steps = instant fun), just as my grandkids.
  • Just steps away from other top attractions downtown, like the Chattanooga Aquarium, Ross’s Landing, and the Tennessee Riverfront.
  • Visitors and locals like me will find some great places to eat in this downtown area near this top summer attraction.
  • Waterfall staircase is seasonal and only flows during the warmer months.
