Why We Love Crescent Beach

As part-time residents of Palm Coast, Steve, Mr. Jax, and I have explored just about every beach in the area—but Crescent Beach Florida keeps pulling us back. This East Florida Beach is where the waves are consistent, the breeze feels just right, and the sand stays cool even in summer.

One of our favorite things? You can drive on the beach here. It’s busier near the Crescent Beach public access points, especially on weekends and holidays. But if you have a 4×4 vehicle, you can cruise down the sand and find a more private, peaceful spot to park. It’s like having your secret slice of paradise—just a few miles from home.

⚠️ Heads up: Unless you have a proper 4×4, don’t attempt to drive on the beach. The sand gets deep in certain spots, especially near the entrance and toward the dunes. During our recent Memorial Day visit, we saw several vehicles get stuck and have to call for a tow—definitely not how you want to spend your beach day (or your money).

🍴 Tip: Crescent Beach has no restaurants, so plan. We always pack a cooler with drinks and snacks—especially if we’re setting up for the day.

Where Is Crescent Beach Florida?

Crescent Beach is found on the eastern coast of Florida, along the Atlantic Ocean.

Crescent Beach is located along scenic A1A, south of St. Augustine and north of Flagler Beach. It’s one of the closest beaches to Gainesville, making it a top pick if you’re looking for a close to Gainesville FL beach that feels like a true getaway.

There are multiple ways to access the beach:

• By foot: Head to the main Crescent Beach public access lot near Cubbedge Road. There’s a small dune walkover for pedestrians, along with public restrooms and showers.
• By 4×4 vehicle: Beach driving access is typically available at Matanzas Avenue (just off A1A). Check for daily conditions and rules with St. Johns County before you go. A small fee may apply, and tides can change driving conditions fast.

🚧 Note: As of Memorial Day 2025, some of the public areas were under construction. Access was still available, but some restrooms and walkways were temporarily closed or rerouted. Expect a few detours or closures near the main lot.

What to Do at Crescent Beach Florida

There’s not a lot of flashy entertainment here, and that’s exactly why we love it. Crescent Beach Florida, is all about slowing down, soaking up the scenery, and enjoying old-school beach vibes. Here are a few of our favorite things to do:

• Relax by the water: Set up your beach chair at Crescent Beach, Florida. Bring a book and relax by the Atlantic Ocean. It’s peaceful, especially in the quieter, drivable areas.
• Walk the shoreline at Crescent Beach Florida. The sand is flat and firm—perfect for early morning or sunset strolls.
• Bring your dog to this Crescent Beach dog-friendly spot. Mr. Jax loves running in the waves. Be sure to bring waste bags and water! Mr. Jax and I learned that drinking ocean water will make your pup sick.
• Try shelling and beachcombing during low tide. Crescent Beach, Florida, often reveals great shells, especially after storms.
• Have a beach picnic at Crescent Beach, Florida. No restaurants on the sand, so pack a cooler with snacks and drinks.
• Grab breakfast near Crescent Beach, Florida. Rodie’s Place on A1A is our go-to for eggs, coffee, and a cozy start to the day.
• Enjoy lunch in Flagler Beach: Flagler Beach is less than 20 minutes away and packed with fun, oceanfront restaurants.
• Walk the dunes near the Crescent Beach public access boardwalk. You’ll find pretty views and great photo spots. Do not walk on the dunes. Dunes are protected areas, and make sure your kids also know the rules.
• Take scenic photos at Crescent Beach, Florida. The views are beautiful—especially on foggy mornings or at golden hour.

Need Crescent Beach directions? Just follow A1A south from St. Augustine or north from Flagler Beach—it’s a straight shot with ocean views the whole way. You’ll know you’ve arrived when the houses thin out and the wide stretch of sand appears alongside the dunes. Markings are not super clear so I would recommend using GPS.

If you’re cruising along A1A— heading from Daytona to St. Augustine or just exploring for the day—don’t skip Crescent Beach, Florida. It’s a quiet, under-the-radar beach that still feels natural and relaxed. Crescent Beach in St. Johns County is a true hidden gem on Florida’s coast.

There’s something for everyone—dog lovers (yes, Crescent Beach is dog friendly!), shell collectors, nature photographers, and anyone looking to soak up some sun with fewer crowds.

Crescent Beach Florida is one of the most dog-friendly beaches in the area. Dogs are welcome on-leash, and the wide, flat shoreline gives them plenty of room to trot, sniff, and splash along the waves.
