Steve and I love the scenic drive along the Ocoee River (which is gorgeous year-round, but especially in the fall). Murphy has become one of our go-to destinations for a quick refreshβhereβs what we usually do when we visit.

ποΈ The Drive: Scenic and Stress-Free
The journey from Chattanooga to Murphy is part of the fun. We follow Highway 64 east, which winds through the Cherokee National Forest and hugs the whitewater rapids of the Ocoee River. Itβs one of those drives where you roll the windows down, put on some music, and just enjoy the ride.
ποΈ Stroll and Snack in Downtown Murphy
Murphyβs historic downtown is small but full of character. We like to park and wander aroundβthereβs a good mix of local shops, antique stores, and cafes. One of our favorite lunch spots? Julie’s Place. For travelers looking for an amazing dining experience, we always visit The Murphy Chophouse.
You may be tempted to eat at the Valley River Casino, but the food options there are limited and not the best.
π° Try Your Luck at Valley River Casino
Harrahβs Valley River Casino is just outside downtown, a fun stop even if youβre not a serious gambler. Weβve played the slots and watched people win (and lose) big. Itβs low-key, not overwhelming, and adds a bit of excitement to the weekend.
Harrah’s River Valley Casino is the on the top of my fun things to do in Murphy NC list.
π Stay at the Brasstown Valley Resort
Booking a stay at the Valley River Harrah’s Casino may be one of the most popular places to stay, but trust me, I have something better. Instead, book a stay at Brasstown Valley Resort. While itβs technically about 25 minutes away in Young Harris, GA, Brasstown Valley Resort is where we love to unwind for the night.
The mountain views are incredible, and the property offers everything from a spa and horseback riding to golf and hiking trails. The lodge has that rustic-chic vibe with fireplaces and cozy corners to relax in. When it comes to the best things to do in Murphy NC consider booking in Young Harris, GA.

- Fields of the Wood β A unique religious park with giant Ten Commandments
- Hiwassee Lake β Great for kayaking or just soaking up lake views

πΎ Mr. Jax Approved?
While Murphy is low-key and relaxing, itβs not always super dog-friendly. Weβve brought Mr. Jax along and found some outdoor spots and dog-friendly patios, but we usually leave him home if we visit the casino or resort.
