If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway in the South, Macon, Georgia, is a hidden gem worth checking out. We didn’t plan to fall in love with this town—but we totally did. It’s got that perfect mix of Southern charm, history, great food, and friendly vibes.
From cherry blossoms and river walks to music legends and mouthwatering meals, Macon is easy to explore and full of personality. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with family, or even bringing your pup, here are some of the best things to do in Macon for a laid-back weekend escape.
🌿 Enjoy the Outdoors
One of the best ways to slow down and enjoy Macon is to spend time outside. The city has some beautiful spots that are peaceful, scenic, and often free to explore.
Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park was one of our favorite stops. It’s quiet, open, and packed with Native American history. You can walk along the trails, climb up the mounds, and visit the small museum inside the visitor center. It’s perfect if you want to stretch your legs and take in something meaningful. Bonus—kids can run free, and there’s no admission fee.
If you’re more into the water, kayaking on the Ocmulgee River is a great way to chill. Rentals are available through local outfitters, and you can take your time paddling through calm, shady stretches. We saw a few people floating in tubes and even fishing off the banks—it’s that kind of easygoing vibe.
On warmer days, head to Lake Tobesofkee, known by locals as “Lake Tobo.” You’ll find a sandy beach area, water slides, and wide-open space to relax. It’s super family-friendly, and you can even camp if you want to make a weekend of it.

Another stop that caught our attention was the Cannonball House. Yep, it actually took a hit during the Civil War. Now it’s a small museum with original furnishings that give you a glimpse into life back then. It’s right downtown and easy to add to your walking tour.

🐶 Is Macon Dog-Friendly?
Yes! We brought Mr. Jax along, and he had a great time. Many patios were happy to welcome dogs, and there were plenty of green spaces for walking. Just keep your pup leashed, especially downtown, and bring water if you’re out exploring during warmer months.
